With the fifth starter position still up for grabs, Jon Niese did little to make a case to fill the spot.
Niese gave up two runs, two hits and two walks in two innings of work as the Detroit Tigers beat the Mets 7-2 in a Grapefruit League matchup in Lakeland. Of course, Spring Training just began, so anybody could still win the job. Mets Manager Jerry Manuel, talking to Newsday, impied that Niese might get a Mulligan for that outing.
In other Mets’ starter news, Johan Santana’s stiff left elbow could cause him to miss his Opening Day start. He supposed to throw a light session in the bullpen session on Sunday. We’ll see how that goes.
