Our NoNoHitters.com count for Memorial Day weekend is going to be a little vague.
After toiling through several days of late-night dropped liners, baserunning gaffes and wide throws during the Mets-Dodgers series, I’m taking a few games off to regroup without a TV, computer or heavy sighs and curses (I think this week set a new record in that department.)
I realize I’m taking a chance that the first Mets no-hitter could happen while I’m camping, but with 7,522 no-no free games under our belt, I’m willing to take that chance.
So our latest count is either 7,522, 7,523, 7,524 or 7,525, or congratulations Johan, Mike or Tim on throwing the first no-no in team history. We’ll sort everything out when we get back.
Just a reminder that you can get the actual count at http://www.davemackey.com.
Johan Santana pitched seven brilliant innings leading the New York Mets to a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Santana (6-2, 1.50) outdueled Daisuke Matsuzaka (0-2, 10.32), totally shutting down two of the Sox’ hottest hitters, Jason Bay and Kevin Youkilis. Gary Sheffield homered for the Mets, his 502nd career dinger.
Jacoby Ellsbury singled to lead off the first inning to drive up the no no-hitter count to 7523.
(Hey, DIrk, you ever consider using a guest blogger?)
An exciting ninth inning featuring a video-review home run and two spectacular defensive plays gave the New York Mets a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.
The Mets drew first blood when Carlos Beltran scored on Gary Sheffield’s single. Beltran had advanced to second on a throwing error by Boston starting pitcher Josh Beckett, who pitched eight otherwise strong innings.
Mike Pelfrey again yielded a leadoff hit to Jacoby Ellsbury, causing our no no-hitter count to bump up to 7524. Pelf later in the inning gave up a two-run single to Kevin Youkilis. But afterwards, Mike settled in and lasted seven innings before handing over the ball to Pedro Feliciano for the eighth.
In the visiting ninth inning, with Sheffield on, pitcher Jonathan Papelbon gave up a two-run homer to Omir Santos. The ball was just barely over the line above the Green Monster. Originally ruled a double, the umpires awarded Santos the home run after a video review. This resulted in Papelbon’s first blown save of the year and the loss.
In the bottom of the same inning, with Kevin Youkilis on first via a walk, Jason Bay hit a liner to David Wright, and tossed it to Luis Castillo in time to erase Youkilis, J.D. Drew lined out to Angel Pagan, and Mike Lowell grounded out with Ramon Martinez making another miracle play, giving Pedro Feliciano the win and J.J. Putz the save.
The Red Sox avoided a sweep of the New York Mets with their 12-5 victory today, capped by Kevin Youkilis’ three run homer in the seventh inning. Youkilis previously had a home run taken from him via video review.
J.D. Drew paced the Red Sox’ offense with four hits, including the Sox’ first off losing pitcher Tim Redding, making it now 7525 Mets games without even one no-hitter. Dirk will hopefully be back in harness on Monday.
