7,551: Pineiro’s 2-hit shutout shuts down Mets

Where’s the O?

Joel Pineiro pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout Tuesday night as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Mets 3-0 at Citi Field.

The Mets didn’t get their second hit until the ninth inning, when pinch-hitter Jeremy Reed lined a single to center. Luis Castillo got the Mets’ first hit in the third with a single up the middle.

Pineiro also broke up Livan Hernandez’s no-hitter with a hard-hit double to left in the third, making it 7,551 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. Brendan Ryan followed with a sacrifice bunt that Hernandez fielded quickly and turned to throw to third, but Piniero wasn’t running and Ryan hustled to reach first safely. Skip Schumaker hit a grounder to first which Daniel Murphy fielded but blew the throw to second to let Piniero score.

Albert Pujols made it 3-0 with a 2 RBI single to left in the seventh.
