Jonathon Niese provided the strong start, and the Mets’ offense came through big-time as New York topped the Philadelphia Phillies 9-1 at Citizens Bank Park.
The Mets jumped on the scoreboard in the second inning with a two-run homer by David Wright and a solo shot by Jeff Francoeur.
Rod Barajas hit homers in the fifth and ninth innings, both solo shots, and also got an RBI double. An Angel Pagan triple and a Jose Reyes single provided the other two Mets’ RBIs.
Niese lost his no-hitter in the third inning on a Jayson Werth single, making it 7,667 New York Mets games without a no-hitter. He threw seven solid innings, yielding just one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
