7,712: Yanks halt Mets’ winning streak at 8

Streak stopped

The New York Yankees halted the Mets’ winning streak at eight Saturday with a 5-3 Subway Series win at Yankee Stadium.

It was a rare loss for Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (9-2), who gave up a two-run homer to Mark Teixeira in the third and another to Curtis Granderson in the fourth.

Pelfrey lost his no-hitter right away when Brett Gardner hit a lead-off single, advancing our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,712 New York Mets games with no no-no. Pelfrey increased his lead above all active-roster Mets pitchers with 26 no-nos lost on the first at bat (see our No-hitters killed by first at bat page for more details.)

Jose Reyes had two homers, a solo shot to open the game and a two-run blast in the third.

Yankees starter Phil Hughes improved to 10-1.
