Bronson Arroyo outdueled Jonathon Niese Wednesday night as the Cincinnati Reds topped the New York Mets 3-1 at Citi Field.
Niese lost his no-hitter in the third inning on a Brandon Phillips homer, moving our NoNoHitters.com count up to 7,729 New York Mets games with no no-no.
That was the Reds’ only hit until the seventh, when Chris Heisey homered to break a 1-1 tie. (Heisey in the bottom of the sixth stole some runs from Jason Bay with a nice running catch in the gap.) Brandon Phillips made it 3-1 later in the seventh with an RBI ground-rule double.
Niese pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six.
Arroyo gave up just the one run on seven hits and no walks while fanning three.
The Mets put two runners on base in the ninth after Ike Davis led off with a double, but Francisco Cordero was able to preserve the save.
