Mets’ Rookie Jonathan Niese, pitching in his second Major League start, shined for eight innings to lead the Mets to a 5-0 win over the Atlanta Braves Saturday night in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

The Mets gave the young Niese some early run support on a two-run homer by David Wright in the first followed by a Fernando Tatis RBI-single. They added two more runs on solo shots by Jose Reyes in the second and Carlos Beltran in the seventh.

Niese allowed just six hits and two walks during the start while striking out seven. Luis Ayala allowed two hits in the ninth but was able to protect Niese’s shutout.

Niese lost his no-hitter in the first inning when Kelly Johnson doubled to left, marking the Mets franchise’s 7,467th game without a no-no.
