Does anyone want to be the New York Mets’ fifth starter?
Candidate Freddy Garcia gave up a first-inning three-run homer to Chris Duncan and a second inning solo blast to Allen Craig Tuesday as the the St. Louis Cardinals pounded the Mets 15-4 in Port St. Lucie Tuesday.
Garcia, who won 17 games with the Chicago White Sox in 2006 but has pitched in just 14 games since after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder, gave up four earned runs on three hits and a walk.
On Saturday, another potential fifth starter, Jon Niese, gave up two runs, two hits and two walks in two innings of work.
The job is up for grabs, so who is going to step up? After all, the person in this role could become the first Mets pitcher to break the 7,482-game-long no-hitter drought.
