Attrition could decide Mets’ fifth starter spot

The Mets’ fifth starter position could be decided by attrition.

The team has shut down right-hander Tim Redding because of weakness and aching in his throwing shoulder, according to MLB.com.

That leaves two oldtimers – Livan Hernandez and Freddy Garcia – and one not ready for primetime player – rookie Jonathon Niese – competing for the spot. Other candidates that could be added into the mix include Fernando Nieve, whom the Mets claimed off waivers on Saturday from the Astros, Nelson Figueroa and Bobby Parnell.
