Maine throws solid 5, yielding two solo shots

The Mets’ John Maine had a strong Spring Training outing Thursday, giving up just two runs on three hits, with both runs coming on solo homers during a 2-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fernando Nieve threw one scoreless inning in relief, though rumors have Jon Niese taking the Mets’ fifth starter spot and Nieve heading to the bullpen. No formal announcement yet from manager Jerry Manuel.

Nelson Figueroa gets the start against the Florida Marlins on Friday.
