7,734: Giants blank Mets gain, this time behind Zito

Blanked again!

The Mets again came up scoreless in a pitchers’ duel Monday as the San Francisco Giants blanked New York 1-0 at AT&T Park.

Barry Zito struck out 10 batters and gave up just two hits – a Ruben Tejada single in the third and a Carlos Beltran two-out double in the seventh – over eight solid innings.

The Mets’ lackluster offense wasted a fine effort by Jonathon Niese, who threw seven innings of six-hit ball only to land in the “L” column. The only run he yielded came in the fourth inning when Aubrey Huff scored on a fielder’s choice.

Niese lost his no-hitter in the first inning on an Edgar Renteria double, moving our NoNoHitters.com count to 7,734 New York Mets games with no no-no.

The Mets managed just one more hit on the night – a David Wright single in the ninth off closer Brian Wilson, but Wilson was able to preserve the save for Zito.
